Hoist consists of a rope or chain which wraps around a drum or lift-wheel. A lifting hook is attached to the load which is to be lifted or lowered. Motor – Motor is the most important component of an electric rope hoist. Heavy duty induction motors are used with high horsepower. Also, torque is started to reduce handling time. The motors are available in various designs with different classes of insulation.
Rope drum – The rope winds around the rope drum which make it a very important component of the system. The rope drum needs to be grooved accurately so that the rope is seated firmly on it. The drum can also be equipped with high-quality ball/ roller bearings to ensure its smooth operation and longevity.
Rope guide – Rope guide prevents the rope from loosening or overriding and maintains proper tension. In order to achieve this, the rope guide needs to be designed accurately to match the grooves of the rope drum.
Gearbox – Gearbox contains helical type gears that are constructed with low carbon steel or alloy steel. The helical gears provide high precision to the operations and are protected against friction by anti-friction bearings which are used on both the sides. The gearbox needs to be well lubricated with oil and must be kept free of dust to ensure its best performance. Gear toughening is a procedure that is done to ensure that the gear works smoothly and has a life of many years of trouble-free operation.
Hooks – Hooks to attach the load is made using high tensile steel. Anti-rotation technology may also be used to steady the hooks.
Bearings – Roller or ball bearings are used on the rotating parts to enhance the life of the system.
Brakes – Electromagnetic disc brakes are generally used in the electric rope hoists to ensure that the brakes remain functioning even when the power supply fails. The brakes are fixed on the rear part of the motor to allow easy maintenance and operational efficiency.
Limit switch – The limit switches prevent over-hoisting and over-lowering of the load.
Control panel– Control panel is the metal sheet containing buttons and levers to control the operations. Cartridge type fuses and steps down transformers are used in the control panel.
Types of electric wire rope hoist
- Fixed position electric wire rope hoist- This is a simple hoist which remains stationary while transporting the load from one position to another.
- Monorail electric wire rope hoist– The hoist moves horizontally along a beam during operations.
- Twin beam electric wire rope hoist- This kind of hoist is designed to handle dual girder overhead cranes. In this arrangement, the hoist is placed on top of the girder. This kind of hoist has a higher capacity and a maximum hook path.
- Low headroom electrical wire rope hoist- This kind of hoist is used when hoist expansion needs to be low or in the event of less space in the headroom.
