A day with a constructor
When you think about a constructor many things come to your mind, but I am sure the most frequent one is how a constructor deals with all the tasks during a day.
A lot of people working in the construction field can be called a constructor. A plumber, a decorator, an architect and also a simple worker. We decided to take an interview and see what a constructor does in a simple working day. I may say we got lucky because we managed to find a hotel constructor. Andrew Jensen is an owner of a construction company, but you don’t have to think of him like he is a boss because he is not. He works with his employees just like he is one of them. The only difference is that he pays them.
Andrew was kind enough to tell us the story about a simple day of a working day.
Here’s a brief part of the beginning of a great interview.
Limeeto: How did you start your construction business?
Andrew: I have worked as a constructor for a long time. I have built hotels, vacations houses and even personal luxury homes. I have started from an early age and I had the opportunity to learn a lot. After 10 years I started to learn about how this business works and I decided to start my own business in constructions.
L: Was that hard? Where did you get the money to start your own business?
A: It was very tough. I had some economies, but I also made some loans. When you start a construction business you have to have a lot of money. I started with a small capital but with a huge and excellent team. I had a team that trusted me. We started with renovating old hotels. I must say we offered really small contracts so we can manage to get into the market. I thought this strategy is the best one to make people see how good we are. And I m proud to say that my strategy was profitable.
L: Where do you think your company is situated right now?
A: I think we are in top 50 constructions in Europe which is a great thing knowing there are thousands of constructions companies in Europe.
L: I thought there are millions.
A: I am only talking about the ones with millions of dollars business quotation.
L: So you own a million dollar company?
A: I have contracts that exceed 1 million dollars, but is not all about the money when you love what you do. I worked in this field my all my life and when I started my own business the feeling I had, was much more satisfactory than money. Money is important of course but when you love your business, money becomes just a number, just a way of keeping track how you did this month than the last month.
L: In the end, we would like you to tell us a brief story about how a working day develops for you
A: Like any other worker I am waking up very early. There is no day that I wake up later than 6 o’clock. Waking up early in the morning helps you do more tasks and this way you make more profit. Simple as that. The first trip is to the office. I greet all my colleagues and I put the administrative things in order for that specific day. I make some calls, I answer some calls, I sign some contracts…things like that.
Then I go on the constructions site and I spend my entire day there. Our projects are huge and it takes a lot of focus to get them done perfectly. I am a perfectionist and I have to get everything done in time and exactly how my customer wants. I don’t like to give orders; I’d rather work hard so my employees have a great example than boss them around. Actually, I can’t be like that because I started from the bottom and I appreciate every worker in my company. I think that creating a solid communication between my workers we can have a great team and succeed every time. I am also motivating my staff financially. I have created some contests regarding projects. If we finish faster or if we do it better than customer required they will be financially rewarded. I had also created day by day bets. We work in two teams and the team which win more points during the week they will be offered a weekend dinner by the losing team. As you can see I am a perfectionist like I said but it’s also fun to work with me. My team is very satisfied with the benefits, I am sure about that.
L: What would you advise a newcomer in the construction industry?
A: Keep going. If this is your dream, make it real. Never give up. Just do it. No matter what happens keep going. Learn from your mistakes and be smarter next time. Eventually, success comes.
L: How about some niche advises…..
A: The team of workers is the most important part of a construction business. Make sure you have the right team and make sure you use the best tool. Don’t be cheap.
